NATURAL SILK SCARVES FOR SUSTAINABLE FASHION

At Lila and Me our pursuit for sustainable fabrics coincides with our promise of quality and a more ethical and sustainable fashion-made purchase. Hence only natural fabrics that reduce environmental impact were considered, tested and sampled - many times over. After testing a variety of fabrics, we agreed upon the Satin Silk for our 65cm scarves and the Modal / Satin Silk for our 110cm scarves with a weight of 14 momme.

Whilst there are many types of silk fabrics like Chiffon, Habotai, Twill, Georgette and Crepe De Chine, Silk Satin is the most valuable. It creates the most luxurious appearance, feels rich, has a soft touch, is glossy, gentle, delicate and ultra-smooth. It feels good, looks good and doesn’t attract static electricity. The silk is naturally created by silkworms, which make cocoons out of a material that people spin into fibres. Satin is a method of weaving fabric.

Silk fabrics also come in blends with Cotton, Wool, Linen and Tencel. To adhere to our objectives of only using natural fabrics, we chose a blend of 80% Modal and 20% Satin Silk for our square 110cm scarf. The Modal fabric is made by spinning cellulose that has been reconstituted from Beech Trees. Beech Trees can be found in Europe, Asia and North America.

Unlike fabrics like acrylic, polyester, rayon, acetate, and nylon which are treated with many harmful toxic chemicals during production (ScienceDaily) and don’t breathe, the Modal fabric is breathable, super-absorbent, resistant to shrinkage, delicate, soft, and fluid. It has a great drape, a smooth lustrous finish that looks good, feels better and is natural as well. It is 50% more absorbent than cotton, keeping moisture away from the body and keeping you feeling fresh.

Let us close with a quotation; “If you’re not making someone else’s life better, then you’re wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better.”

With love
